Gypsum board, commonly known as drywall, is a technical product term used by manufacturers for a specific board with a gypsum core and a paper facing. Normally, gypsum board is a premier building material for wall, ceiling, and partition systems in residential, institutional, and commercial structures. This product is designed to provide a monolithic surface to schemes and a seamless appearance is obtained as the joints and fastener heads are covered with a joint treatment system. Gypsum board is a panel made of calcium sulphate dihydrate (Gypsum) with or without additives and normally pressed between a facer and a backer (typically thick sheets of paper). Gypsum board is used to make interior walls and ceilings and it is often called drywall, wallboard, or plasterboard. It differs from other panel-type building products, such as plywood, hardboard and fiberboard, because of its non-combustible core and paper facers. When joints and fastener heads are covered with a joint compound system, gypsum wallboard creates a continuous surface suitable for most types of interior decoration.
